One Year After the Fall of Roe v. Wade

In the last year, people of reproductive age in 16 states have lost access to abortion, forcing many to travel hundreds of miles to seek healthcare OR sacrifice their personal autonomy and continue with unwanted or life-threatening pregnancies.
However, extremist state legislatures are not stopping at abortion bans. Today, we highlight a secondary problem: the violent and legal threats against those assisting, providing, and seeking reproductive healthcare.
Anti-choice leaders understand that their bans do not extinguish people’s determination to seek healthcare and determine their own futures. As such, they are now turning their focus to introducing and passing legislation to further criminalize abortion-seekers and providers. This legislation looks different in each state but often includes exorbitant fines of up to $100,000, threats to revoke providers’ licenses, or in extreme cases, a risk of felony charges with lengthy prison sentences if convicted.
In Alabama for example, healthcare providers can be convicted of a Class A felony and sentenced up to 99 years in prison, just for performing an abortion.

At the same time, these organizations will aim to support those who will secure and defend healthcare access and autonomy for every American.
